King Richard I, "Richard the Lionheart" - brother of Prince John - was the king the mythical Robin Hood was waiting for. He was away fighting in the Crusades against the warrior Saladin and the Saracens.
Richard could speak very little English and spent only about six months in his own country. Here's a short history:

Prince John was the brother of Richard the Lionhearted, who went off on the Crusades and left Prince John in charge. He was killed during the Crusades, though.
As to Robin Hood, there are several candidates for who he actually was. Most likely, he was a composite of many criminals of the time, and every time one of them did something unusual, it was credited to Robin Hood. The legend grew until he was what we hear of today.

If memory serves correctly, I believe Robin Hood was waiting on Richard-the-lion-hearted to return from the Crusades- Robin himself had fought in the crusades, and upon the news of his father's untimely death, returned home from them to duke it out with Nottingham. I'm fuzzy on the details, but I think that When King Richard did return and heard what Robin had done, he made him a duke/earl- but I'm not sure.

The King that he waited for was King Richard. He had taken part in the Crusades. The great warrior against this king was Tancred *I guess, because this is who King Richard went to fight against*.

It was King Richard during the crusades...the Kevin Costner movie version touches upon that part of the story, if you don't want to go digging through history books.
