Hi all,

I want apply for a job which I think I'm perfectly qualified for, with a major Christian NGO. Problem is, I'm not a Christian, and they won't answer this question directly when I put it to them: do I still stand equal chance of getting the job? Am I even alowed to apply? One, I can't provide a pastors refernce. I can see they're making it difficult for me, I just wondered where I stood legally with this (UK). Thanks for any input.

Buddy...you need to check the local laws regarding employment in private (esp. religious) institutions...depending on the status of this organization as well as the prevailing law, it might be legal for them to deny you employment on the basis of your religion...as they might not be receiving any grant from the govt. and hence are under no obligation to follow the govt.'s diktat regarding employment.

Also, look at the current employees structure in that organization...see how many are non-Christians and if they can offer you any advice as to how they find working over there...

No harm trying...but be prepared to be turned down (without having an explicit explanation offered).

Hope this helps and good luck!

Well, I'm not up on UK laws...but I can share USA law information.

First, if they are a private group, they can do pretty much what they want. We have Title 4/9 (?) laws here that if even a private group gets federal funding, then they can discriminate on religious grounds.

It sounds like they require a pastor's reference and you can't provide one, so...why are trying so hard? Consider applying for the premier soccer club but you can't provide any former playing experience...would you sue for that?

Sounds like its time to move on to the next opportunity.

I'm going to apply for a job as an airplane pilot. I'm qualified, but don't know much about airplanes or flying.
Apply elsewhere. The Bible says you're either for God or against him. If you are not for him, you will taint the organization.
