It's probably not a big problem. Society has over reacted when it comes to things like lead and asbestos. The lead paint scare was basically brought on by children years ago that would eat lead based paint (that's a poor parenting problem)-- there hasn't been lead based paint on the market for about 30 yrs. If you have a coffee mug that's marked 'Made in China' (and who doesn't) chances are it contains lead.
I would say follow the instructions just as a precaution but I can't believe that the lead levels in a pair of earplugs (did you mean earbud headphones?) would be all that high to affect your overall health.

I've seen that warning on stuff before. I never took it too serious. I don't think they could sell earplugs if they were really that dangerous. They would have a ton of lawsuits.

Yes it is.
Lead is a heavy metal and is deadly poisonous.
I would suggest getting a different kind that has no lead in them.
