The new highway on the South coast is like a highway in the US. It is fairly new and even boasts a toll booth (about $1us). I was just there earlier this month and drove around some. On the North coast most of the road is in great shape except in some areas where they are currently building new roads. I estimate that by my next trip in 2007 the roads would all be good for driving.
Imagine the main road along the coasts makes it possible for you to circle the island! The only parts of the roads I am not too crazy about are the winding stretches through the hills and along the hillsides. The taxi drivers there a notoriously reckless so as a tourist you have to be on the alert. Overall I had a great driving experience without any incidents.
Another thing to be ready for is that they drive on the left side in right-hand drive vehicles over there so at first you may be a bit disoriented. It is not difficult though so you should be fine. Just be careful when going through the hills or on winding roads.
Additionally, you can drive with a US driver's license over there. A bit of advise, if you are renting a car get the additional insurance coverage they offer because if you have an accident there it could be a nightmare for your US insurance to cover damages.
Have a safe and fun trip! :)

First of all in Jamaica driving is on the LEFT side of the road rather than the right so you will for sure get in trouble if you are not used to that. Yes, you can drive EIGHT (8) miles per hour, but not EIGHTY (80) if that what you meant to type.

i've got pushed on the left before and once you're from Canada/us of a, you are going to locate it no longer common. driving is okay, yet turning, you need to truly think of roughly what you're doing. I continually went on the incorrect area pulling right into a driveway etc. additionally, I consider the others approximately driving in Jamaica. maximum folk speed, and tailgate. We have been there at Christmas, and witnessed a head-on motor vehicle twist of fate basically outdoors of Montego Bay. commencing out your day seeing 3 ineffective human beings became something I never decide for to confirm back. My advice, hire a Juta cab for the day.they are sensible and that they are good drivers.

The roads from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios were really bad in some areas. The new road they are working on will be great when completed and what is done is nice to drive on. But, the other areas were horrible. I hear that from Montego Bay to Negril they are done with that construction and is it very nice.
