Lebanon has 18 official religious sects. Fifteen are Christian. Three are Muslim (including the Druze who are an ofshoot of Shiite Islam that fled to mount Lebanon from Egypt). It is not known if any Lebanese Jews are still in Lebanon, most having left the country when its civil war started in 1975.
Historically, Maronite Catholics made up more than 50% of the country until a few decades ago. at that point, Christians remained the majority, but no single group made up 50% of the country. Then between the exodus from Lebanon's civil war, the lower average number of children Christians have, and Syrian domination, the ratio of Christians was reduced as compared to Muslims, especially the Shiite who went from one of the smallest sects to the largest in about 30 years. A larger exodus of Muslims did not occur until after the war ended in 1990. It is estimated that there are 4 million Lebanese in Lebanon and between 15 and 23 million outside of Lebanon.
Lebanon is at the crossroads of the ancient world. The Lebanese people are descendents of the Phoenicians, the Canaanites, the Hebrews, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Egyptians, the Turks, and the Persians. In a way, they represent more of the ancient world than any other people.
It's just unfortunate that religious zealotry has been such a destructive force for a country that Pope John Paul II called the land of peace because of the willingness of the various Lebanese sects to try and live together in a country with no separation between church and state. When he was there 10 years ago, just as many Muslims went to see him as Christians. Something has to be said of a people that will do that.
I happened to be visiting lebanon in 2002 when the remains of St. Theresa were taken from village to city to village in Lebanon. I believe I saw more Muslims throwing roses at the small coffin that held her remains than I saw Christians.
My point is, Lebanon's religious diversity and tolerance should be allowed to set an example to the world. Of course it is a country where passions run high. And the peace and unity of the people can just as easily be swayed to destructiveness by extremists on any side, be they Muslim, Christian, or Jew. In that way, it really is a microcosm of the world... isn't it?

The population of Lebanon is composed of three predominant ethnic groups and religions: Muslims (Shi'ites, Sunnis, Alawites), Druze, and Christians (mostly Maronite Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, Melkite Greek Catholics, and some Syrian Orthodox, Armenian Catholics, Syrian, Chaldean, Latin Rite Catholics, Assyrians, Copts and Protestants). No official census has been taken since 1932, reflecting the political sensitivity in Lebanon over confessional (religious) balance. It is estimated that about 60% of the resident population are Muslims; the rest are Christians. There used to be a small minority of Jews, mostly living in the eastern region of Beirut. Also, a small community (less than 1%) of Kurds (also known as Mhallamis or Mardins) live in Lebanon. There are approximately 15 million people of Lebanese descent, mainly Christians, spread all over the world, Brazil being the country with the biggest Lebanese community abroad.

Lebanon used to be a christian majority
In the 50's to the 60's the christians were having a bad time from the Muslims, mostly shiites and started leaving.
Today the majority is Muslim (54%) and the rest are christians and druze (who some mistake to be muslims).

Why would one nation all have the same religion?
There are as many Christians as Muslims there and the Muslims are divided by their sects. There are even Jews living in Lebanon.....
