There was no running back who could do it all as well as Walter Payton...he was the best blocking back ever, he kicked extra points, led the league in return yards one season, is still the Bears all-time leading receiver, he started at quarterback a couple of times and his running speaks for itself.
Barry might have been more elusive.
Jim Brown may have been more powerful.
Gayle Sayers was faster.
But no one did it all like Walter.

Most exciting was Barry Sanders. Walter Payton was a blue-collar player, he simply went to work every day, gave his all, but wasn't flashy, the best ever? Yes. Flashy? No. Barry Sanders did things with the ball that we had never seen before, and we will never see again, I will never forget the play where he is surrounded by 7 or 8 Bear defenders, and woops, he squirts out the side and goes the distance. Every time he touched the ball, it was a threat to go all the way, for his entire career, nobody else can say that.

There have been so many truely great RBs over the years that I have watched the NFL that I love many of them, but to pick just one: I gotta go with Walter Payton. That '85-'86 Bears superbowl team was one of the most "perfect" teams in the history of football and Payton was practically unstoppable!

Barry Sanders, who els. If Barry Sanders had the Dallas front line in the 90's Barry would hold all rushing records.

Barry Sanders was the most exciting to watch, even though he was not the best. That would be Jim Brown.

Barry Sanders, he was unbelievable to watch. He made defenders look silly all the time. You better have ankle braces on when you played Barry. One time he juked so hard he lost his shoe and still broke off a long run with only one shoe on.

Great question...for me it was three: Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, and Terrell Davis. Sander was simply amazing, when he had the ball you just watched in amazement and didn't say a word. Davis was a workhorse and he was unstoppable. Jackson was just cool, everybody wanted to be like Bo!
