could be gunk on the little spinning rods that the mouse wheel spins. try cleaning that. or, better yet, get a cheap $15 optical mouse

Points go to miserablestar, you need optical. The ball mouse will get sticky again within a few months.

Check the pads that it rests on (there is usually one at each corner of the underside of the mouse). If these are gunked up, scrape it off.

Alternatively, buy an optical mouse - they're cheap now and much better.

Take the ball out and wash it with dishwashing detergent or shampoo. Let it dry. Put a very small amount of alcohol on a paper towel and clean the mouse casing out. Shake any particles out of it. Clean your mousepad.

if you turn the mouse upside down, you will see two arrows, twist that open, take the ball out, clean it with some alcohol and just blow on the inside, there may be dust inside the little place where the ball sits, that has always worked for me.

There is a wonderful anti-static cleaner in handy pull up wipes that will do the job nicely. In fact you can use them to clean all of your electronics, including your computer screen. They are a good investment; as they seem to last forever. I don't have them right now to see who makes them, but there are probably a number of brands on the market. I got mine from Sam's Club...and they are excellent. Just remember to shut your computer down before cleaning any of the components.
