I usually read books on Africa, fictional or non, and also enjoy reading most modern best sellers. Basically I'm looking for good books, with depth to them to learn from whilst I'm abroad. So far I've only packed Alex Garland's "the beach".

Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck
any Mrs. Polifax mystery by Gilman (not exactly in depth but the main character is a spy and travels all over the world. I seem to recall one where she goes on an African safari. Very fun series.)
Paradise Lost by Milton
Wings of Refuge by Lynn Austin
Dreaming Water by Gail Tsukiyama (sp?)
The Hiding Place by Cori Ten Boom
Christy by Catherine Marshall

His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. That man is going to have to give me royalties - I recommend these books every time this question comes up! They are amazing though as well as a bloomin' good read! The only thing you will learn from The Beach is not to do what the characters in it do!

Should try the The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Its bout a journey by the author, fictionalised, fulfilling his dreams. Its quite easy to digest and its an international hit.

It gives a nice warm feeling after you've read it. Its slightly skewed towards Christianity and Muslim. But do give the book a read, its good, guaranteed.

The Perks of being a Wallflower. i think of the author#s Stephen Chbosky. This e book became fairly astonishing/ i could no longer placed it down and the protagonist's perceptions have been astute and deeply shifting in places. this is somewhat dark for trip analyzing in some areas however the uplifting bits in others fairly make it properly worth analyzing.

Well, books are getting longer, so pick one which is around a thousand pages. How about Edward Rutherford's 'Ireland Awakening'? Just enough of a cold shower to refresh you during those long tropical nights.
