They're not really mascots -- more like nicknames.

Man U - Red Devils
Arsenal - Gunners
Chelsea - Blues
Liverpool - Reds
Tottenham Hotspur - Spurs
Watford - Hornets
West Ham - Hammers
Charlton Athletic - Addicks
Fulham - Cottagers
Everton - Toffees
Manchester City - Blues
Sheffield United - Blades
Wigan - Latics
Reading - Royals
Portsmouth - Pompey
Newcastle - Magpies
Blackburn - Rovers
Bolton - Wanderers
Aston Villa - Villa
Middlesborough - Boro

Also, the point of the Champion's League is to have the best teams from Europe playing against each other (so the top 3 or 4 from each league). Therefore, I would say the quality is better across the board than in the Premiership, simply because you have the top teams in Europe.

the UEFA Champions' League is Europe's premier club competition & it is open to all league champions in Europe respectively (some countries may have 2, 3 or 4 teams in the competition).

so you can expect some great matches in this competition as it features the best teams from all over Europe. i'm looking forward to this season already this coming September 2006.

FC Barcelona of SPAIN won the last season Champion's League back in May 2006 when they defeated Arsenal of ENGLAND 2-1 in the final that was held in Paris, France.
