Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah I think the most lenient point of view is that three-dimensional images of anything that has a soul is forbidden. That would mean things drawn on a plane surface, like a picture or a painting, would be permitted. The more strict ruling is that even flat images are haraam, except in the case of necessity, such as for ID cards. In textboooks in conservative countries such as Saudi Arabia, you will see pictures drawn in such a way that the head is separated from the body so it could not be construed as a "living" thing. I personally do not know which of the rulings is more correct, but I tend to be conservative. I don't display photos of my family, though I will keep them put away in an album. I do cross stitch, but only of flowers or other plants or buildings. I have absolutely NO statues in my home. My children have action figures to play with but I don't like the little baby dolls that are so lifelike they look like real infants - those actually creep me out, lol. Most kids outfits have cartoon characters on them, and I don't worry about it, but I don't let my kids wear such clothes when they go to the masjid. I guess I come down somewhere in the middle. May Allah forgive me for any shortcomings in my understanding of this issue, Ameen. Fi Aman Allah, Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid

I live near Cleveland, Ohio. The cost of living is low here. The schools are good. I like my neighbors. We don't get hurricanes and if there are earthquakes, they aren't the kind you feel. Traffic isn't bad. The metroparks are beautiful.

The Worst - sometimes the winters are long and cold. Sometimes it's too hot and humid (right now) in the summer. We're not close to a real beach (I don't consider Lake Erie a real beach) and we're not close to mountains. I love the mountains.

I live in Virginia, out in the country. It's the most beautiful place I have ever lived and I love it here. The privacy is great-- you can run outside to get something out of your car in your pajamas and no one see you. Also, we are almost a mile off of the main road, which makes it even better. The yard seems to go on forever and is a great place for my kids to play and for us to have vegetable and flower gardens. Also, the view here is breathtaking. We are surrounded by mountains which are red, gold, and orange in the fall and white with snow in the winter. The worst thing about living in the country is the possibility of seeing a snake from time to time. I am scared to death of those things. Also, when my husband prepares for hay season, I do hate the smell of fertilizer. But, overall I couldn't be happier with where I live! :)

I live in Tyler TX.
The best thing is that it's close enough to Dallas to go shopping and then come home to a smaller town life.
The worst thing is the schools. I'm glad my children are grown and don't have to go to these schools.
