Easy...do what the haulage companies and farmers did. Organise blockades and make the Govt sit up and address the issue. The Govt rake in the tax and the fuel suppliers make millions out of us. If my profits fell to only 5.5 million i dont think i would be disapointed!!!

Actually electric cars are a great idea. The person who said how would you charge them is living in the past and doesn't know enough about hybrid cars IE the Lexus 400 hybrid.
Hybrid cars use petrol and electricity, when your driving round town doing about 30-35mph the car uses the electric battery when the speed increases between 35- 60mph the petrol engine kicks in, above 60 both engines are used, so if you do most of your driving in London traffic then you will use mostly the electric engine saving money on fuel. The brakes charge the battery every time they engage it's all very clever stuff

It is not a finite resource in terms of the availability of supply in our lifetimes.
there is a cost to extracting it and there is not much of the stuff left that can be extracted for 20 - 30 dollars a barrel. At the higher price of 70-100 dollars per barrel, there is LOADS of the stuff left.
The current high prices are because of uncertainty in the middle east, which is being prodded and poked by the political aides of the petro-chemical industries. (GWBUSH) the oil execs are making a multi billion dollar fortune from the current prices, because they are still extracting 20 dollar a gallon oil and selling it at 70+ dollars a barrel on the open markets. Just because Israel launches attacks against hezbollah, or Iran announces a return to Uranium extraction, it doesn't make a 20 dollar barrel of oil cost more than 20 dollars to extract and refine into chemicals and oil and gasoline/petroleum.
but the political situation leads to the view that an escalation in hostilities may eventually cause the Saudi oil fields and the Iranians and whoever else in the region to restrict the production of oil. So based on the likleyhood of certain outcomes, oil is priced to reflect the need to build up reserves and maintan supply.
So the gas prices rise, the execs make obscene profits and we suffer. But the supplies will continue.
The only way to get the price down in th UK, is to work to create a stable and peaceful middle east.
For all the ignorant and flippant responses of, do not use a petrol car, use an electric one, That is not a solution.
The whole of western civilisation rests upon oil. global and neo-local trade could not happen without oil, most of our household an business goods are made of things that are made from the petro-chemical industry, plastics, detergents, you name it, all made from oil.
transportation of goods requires oil, not just for fuel, but the lubrication of the moving parts of a vehicle, not to mention that the electricity to power the electric car will probably come from an oil or gas or coal fired generator.

Everyone should stop using petrol driven transport. Less people would be buying petrol, so according to the laws of supply and demand, the price would drop.
If we didn't use cars our public transport system would have increased revenue and therefore be able to offer better services. We'd also be burning less fossil fuel and polluting the planet to a lesser degree.
So why haven't we done this already? Because we're lazy and selfish.
I'll get my coat.

We should elect a Conservative Government! Yes oil prices are rising and there is nothing we can do about it short of a miracle and peace in the Middle East but we can get rid of the Labour Fat cats who chrage such a ridiculous amount of tax on it!
It's not my fault, I never voted for Labour!

The solution would be to not pay the high prices for the gas but unfortunately as in America, we are all in a position that we have to pay it to go make the money to pay it.

It is a finite resource, as supply decreases price increases. Basic economics.
Oh, how would you generate the lectric for your electric car????
Only viable alternative I can see is biofuels such as veg oil.
