I am wondering from reading JoYbOy's long, indepth and obviously knowledgeable answer to kirsty f's question re seeing Superman returns was a good idea; whether he and I saw the same movie? It was abysmal. A pale imitation of the original Richard Donner movies. Does anyone else agree with me, that is was boring, overlong and just not exciting like the orginal movies? That the set pieces were just that - 'set pieces' and not part of a movie and that Superman looked effeminate and ineffectual as the 'man of steel'? The action sequences as with a lot of modern day blockbusters were they not just too 'in your face' so you couldn't really get a perspective of what was going on ? And above all - the story - couldn't it have been condensed into something as long as an episode of Star Trek Next Gen. and nowhere near as interesting?

Film makers in Hollywood if you don't know how to tell a story anymore, I'll be happy to come over there and show you how - if you pay the airfare ?

Superman Is a good example of a bad story. I saw the movie, I actually enjoyed the scene where, Superman lost his powers and got his butt kicked like the coward he really is. Half the movie, he looked like a computer generated character (Ala Final Fantasy). How does any one believe, that if I would come to work with glasses on, nobody would recognize me? C'mon!

Hollywood lost the plot years ago when it decided to make remake after remake of all the best old movies and box office hits from the 60's and 70's! very few screenwriters in Hollywood have what it takes...
As for Hollywood film studios they just keep dishing out the dosh to meet a quota. They don't actually consider the consequences of bad movie production..I rarely go to the movies anymore the last good film I saw was the The lord of the rings trilogy...if its American I won't bother ..
If its British or European maybe...
Hollywood needs to cop on its more a profit than Quality business nowadays and that sucks!

The problem with the movie is that it was mean to be seen in #D and that made it less enjoyable for some.

As for the plot, I have seen worse. Try following the Highlander Saga if you can.

And Superman always looked gay. He walks around in tights with his underwear on the outside like a professional wrestler.

You just have to come to the conclusion that you have grown up and expect more realism in your viewing pleasure. It is not hollywood that has lost the plot but you that have lost your sense of imagination. You need to suspend reality and just enjoy the images.

I think what's happening in movies mirrors what's happening in music. Because of the expense in filmmaking, actors fees, advertising, etc. There is a lot riding on every film. Studios are for-profit businesses and they aren't accepting the smaller profit margins that they used to, so they are taking fewer and fewer risks. This means that instead of fantastic fare some of the time or abysmal fare some of the time, we just get mediocre crap all the time.

It's easy to second guess someone else and to be sure, if you were calling the shots, there'd be some know-it-all that would dis your work saying they could do better.

But in general, I do agree that Hollywood has lost its grip on the audience. I just question whether you are the fix, lol! :)

the simple fact that they keep recreating OLD stuff proves that they have definitely lost it. I'm a fan of "Dukes" and "Knight Rider" just like everyone, but just b/c it worked once DOES NOT mean it will work again! Let it die already
