People termed office workers tend to be the main non weekend workers but even some of them still work on Saturdays occasionally. Schools are rarely open at weekends so the perception is that "the English don't work at weekends" but it's an understandable myth.

Where does that come from?! There are plenty of people working in England in the weekend - who's running the buses, trains, serving in shops, restaurants.

I work every other weekend, so that doesnt rule out ALL english people, and many others that I know do to.

That is a question best put to the government.
They determined that the 5 day working week should be standard.
Although it is not strictly adhered to.

i work weekends only, unless i do overtime....
how else would eldery people buy their newspapers? or alcoholics buy their alocohol?
and smokers buy their fags?
and people cooking sun day dinner buy their mintsauce?
kids their sweets...
and so on!
