It is a nervous habit - what is the first thing you think of when you see a person biting their nails - yep thats right, they look nervous or stressed out over something - but also it does become a habit and then you can just bit your nails for no reason at all

Its an unconcious act, some people do it out of habit, some do it while they are stressed and some just do it for no particular reason. A good way to stop it is to put something unpleasant tasting like nail polish or vinegar on the nails, and that will usually stop that behaviour pretty quick.

I never used to when I was a kid. As soon as reality set in at 18, my nails looked like I'd been trying to escape through an asylum wall.
I tried "stop-n-grow", but I liked the taste.
I think some of us are just into auto-consumption. Which is a nuisance, as I need the nails to get at the bogies.

Dear Samantha,

People bite their nails to show that they are the 'real thinkers'.
Or they want to tell that there is a problem before them and they are thinking 'how to solve' it. But to me this is only a bad habit and nothing else.

Thanks

With me it's a habit. I managed to stop picking at my toe nail dacades ago but still can't resist the lure of a good finger nail.
