right ok, personally i think you are maing the right choice to get one which represents the things that she liked while she was alive. For example 'mum' tattooed anywhere is slightly dubious, and her name might end up being a problem if you get a new girlfriend and she doesnt know that its your mums name. perhaps get something to do with the rose, go into a few tattooists and explain the situation, you will obviously want something quite masculine as well I am assuming. maybe they could design something especially for you, if you wouldnt mind paying a little bit extra.

Hi Paddy - I think it is a lovely idea to want to remember your mum in this way.
My suggestion would be a large Celtic style rose. I don't think you need anything else like crucifixes or names. I think that would look modern and would be timeless like all Celtic designs.
Do you know where you are going to get it done? Manchester is the place to come - Beckham still uses the same guy from Manc to do his bod. (Louis Molloy - Middleton Studios).
Good luck with whatever you choose.

Trying using Google image search for tattoos with what you mention above ie "Rose Tattoo" - you'll get loadsa ideas, and once you've got a few, take them to a tattoo artist telling them which bits you want from each picture and they'll be able to sort you something out.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your mum. You have my sympathy.
A good tattoo artist should be able to come up with something you'll like. Just shop around until you find something good.

well if she was a religious lady that means she would not of liked tattoo and espeacially on her own son.
Think of something else that she will be pround of like, may be you could , give something money , to the place where she worshipped in the name of your mother ,that would be something she would be very pround of, even if she was alive today , not something like a tattoo that even if she saw that would quite be upset with you.
