What do they count for? Is it worth getting a certificate from them?

The exams arn't that important. W3C is more recogniesed in the Web Standards Validation sector so as long as your can create a good standard page your cool with W3C.

First of all, visit http://w3c.org if you have not done it yet.
Maybe, you will learn more from there.
The next part of the question: are their exams well recognized or not - it depends on who tries to recognize: i am almost sure that 99% of employers had never heard of w3c but whey are well-known among professionals. I am not webmaster or html formatter but believe me that w3c certificate means for me much more than stupid "MS degree" :-)

w3c is good but exams are not that much regognised.If you want exam site than go for expertrating.com
