I've recently seen various ads on websites like yahoo where the add extend out when rolled over, i'm sure this is probably a layer or something similar. So how's it done? i'm thinking of creating an information bar with a similar feature.

you can use divs and javascript to make this happen. use the visibility properties of the div and and make sure to the set the div's positioning as absolute. i've done it so that the javascript uses the mouse position to set the divs positioning. you can find lots of samples and tutorials if you search on google or yahoo.
