I smoked for many years, in fact I was a professional smoker. I gave them up In January 2005.
Two things I found I needed, firstly the determination to stop----YOU MUST WANT TO QUIT, secondly something to take away the cravings, having tried everything else down through the years I found the patches to be a great success, 15mg at the start then down to 10mg and finish off with 5mg.
A year and a half later I wouln't touch a cigarette and if you succeed NEVER PUT A CIGARETTE IN YOUR MOUTH AGAIN.
It's not easy but I promise you it will be worth it in the end --plus don't forget to save the money and treat yourself every now and then.
I wish you the very best of luck.

Patches are the only thing that's helped me. If you smoke more than a half pack a day you'll want to start with the 21 mg and stay on them for 6 weeks, then you'll go to the 14 mg for a few weeks, and finally down to 7 mg. The whole patches process (in it's required amount) takes 10 weeks. The patches keep away the physical withdrawls...headaches, irritability, nausea, etc. So that you can focus on the mental addiction. It's a rough and rocky road. I have smoked for nearly 10 years which translates into almost $10,000. It really hits you when you see that monetary amount. That's what pushed me to stop (haven't smoked regularly in 2 weeks so far) again. Also think of a major item you would love to have and set a time limit. For example, I told myself that if I don't pick up cigarettes again by the start of next year I will buy myself this guitar I've always wanted to own, but just cost too much money to buy. Now without smoking I'll save $1000 per year. So I'm trading two years of smoking for a super guitar. It's all in what will motivate you. It's easier to smoke than to quit, so challenge yourself to stop. Good luck.

Just quit!. I smoked for 35 plus years and quit last October cold turkey. My husband did the same. Its all about how bad you wanna stop. Just do it. In less than a week, it gets easier and as time goes on. I get the urges now and then, but they go away as fast as they come on. You can do it!!!

It's hard to stop smoking all of a sudden. Try eliminating one or two cigarettes a day. That will surely help you. An advice: don't stop them at once...take it easy :)
