So you want to learn about building a computer.
Start by setting your budget. Look at the price of various CPU chips first. Once you have selected this, pick your motherboard and RAM. Check the total against your budget.
So let's say that you want a Pentium 4 with 800FSB. Let's say that your budget could afford a Prescott style, with socket 478.
Now, look for the motherboard that would satisfy that requirement.
I use http://www.newegg.com to look for compatible hardware and read the reviews.
My last picks were a Pentium 4 800FSB at 3.0MHz. I picked an ASUS p4p800 SE board. I picked DDR 400 PC3200 RAM for performance.
I double check everything at http://www.coastmemory.com
Then select the case and other components.
In the end, you could have bought an awesome DELL with flat LCD panel monitor for under $800 with awesome capabilities, software included.

What about OS and booting your computer? You need atleast one HDD fixed in your computer to work with Windows. You need to install Windows in that HDD. Its sure you can remove the HDD whenever you want, but to boot your PC, you need to connect it to your PC everytime. So its always better to fix an HDD in you PC for the OS.
1. Buy a motherboard and compatible Processor and RAM.
2 Get a cabinet with SMPS or SMPS seperately.
3. Get USB PCI card if the motherboard doesnt have it. Most of the Motherboard have all the Interfaces like Display, Sound, USB buit-in.
4. Get two HDDs if possible. One to fix in cabinet and the second to play with.
Assemble PC with Cabin, SMPS, Motherboard, Processor, RAM and HDD. Connect the Monitor and CD Drive. Install OS. Now you will be able to connect your printer, Burner, secondary HDD and other devices.

Well, we all started somewhere...
But, All-in-one denotes most Mac systems, like the iMacs, with the computer, DVD burner, hard drive, and LCD in one cool unit.
I rebuild tray loading and slot loading iMac systems, and, many All-in-one units have everything on the main logic board, os if static electricity on the LAN blows out the Ethernet port, you're screwed for a whole unit!
I like to build from an existing box, used, and simply upgrade it to the purpose I desire, using IPCOP for the firewall on 133 to 866 mhz machines, and for desktops, running Linux which makes them at the least, 8X faster than ever!
