We don't know EXACTLY if we really got computer viruses. We just RELYing on antivirus softwares, which on turn RELY on vdf (virus definition file). If you got NEW virus and they are not yet in their vdf, so you have it.
If things are not NORMAL on your computer as stated by people above, then if you really suspect that a file has a virus, you can give it to respective antivirus companies for them to check!
So far, my antivirus software is still faithful, all were catched by ANTIVIR.

When my computer starts to freeze up or I have missing icons on my desktop I know I have got a problem. I back up my computer frequently now as a result of viruses.
