A stranger came to my work and asked for money to get home because he left his wallet at a bar which had closed. I invited him in and I gave him gas money to get him home. He looked biz casual. The cops love hanging out at my work and so they showed up at that moment. He did say he was drinking which is why he felt uneasy... I don't know if I am paranoid or what...Should I have done that or not?

Don't second guess yourself because you showed kindness to another human being. It was a compassionate gesture. Leave it at that.

I think you did the right thing. If the cops arrest him for drunk driving, there is nothing you can do. You simply responded to this guy's request for help and I think that's ok. Don't beat yourself up over this--it probably happened for a reason and you might never know why. It's usually best to take the high road and be compassionate.

There's nothing wrong with helping someone in time of need, but if it becomes a habit he is scamming you. Also if he is a reputable man, once he gets his wallet back he should come back and return your money. After all he knows where you work.

I would have called the cab and pre paid the cab. This way you are sure the money goes for what the stranger said he needed. Otherwise it might have gone for drugs or alcohol.

Probably not wise with the world being as it is today. It's such a shame but it's at the stage where we cannot trust another person. Very sad.

That IS the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind to sling arrows at the unfortunate, or to hold your arms about them and, by not opposing, melt them.
