I'm in a debate with someone over this subject. He says a person moves their hand away from a hot object because the pain inspires. I say it's love of self that inspires the person to move back from the heat. I think that pain causes desperation. He says that the weak are desperate. I think he's a jerk. Opinions?

Different people are motivated differently... some are ONLY inspired by pain, some only by love, others, by pride or by a challenge.

I had a former boss, who learned very early in... that the way to get me to do something was to come to me with it and then, in the process of explaining what he wanted or needed... stop and say... "Nah... never-mind... that's impossible".

The challenge of that would motivate me to find a way.

As far as PAIN... removing your hand from a HOT OBJECT is a reflex. And to continue to burn yourself, is either STUPID or someone who lacks self-preservation. I don't that THAT particular "object lesson" has anything to do with inspiration.

I wouldn't answer you with a scientifical explanation. I'd just say that desperation works in both ways so part of what he said is true and part of what you said is also true. However, in my opinion, the ability of a person to cope with love and desperation depends on the circumstances and environment. Pain or love of self can be inspiring if you want them to. If you view pain as a challenge, it gives you an inspiration but if you view it as a way of losing, you really lose. Self-love should also be moderated. I mean, sometimes when you love yourself too much you become blinded, thus, instead of being inspired you become the exact opposite.

Pain causes a nervous reaction in your body. Your brain inspires you to act. In a sense, pain inspires your body to act. However the reaction is an unconscious one therefore it cannot be classified as love of self, but it is a sort of natural, animalistic self-preservation. On the other hand, I do agree that your friend is a jerk.

Weak are not desperate. I think he is a real jerk! But opinions really varied from each other's view.

Senses comes that's why people pull away their hands from a hot object. Its a reaction that our brain processes.
