I agree they gave away very little. I only knew two of the prospects. I dont know what Philly had in mind other then clearing some salary

As you know I'm not a Yankees fan, but it was a great trade for the Yanks. As far as I'm concerned, they got Lidle and Abreu for free. I cant believe the Phillies made that trade without even getting Philip Hughes.

As a Mets fan though, I'm happy those guys are off the Phillies, now if they'll just trade Met-Killer Pat Burrell, I'll be very happy.

Of course it's a good trade for the Yankees. All the Phillies really wanted was someone to take over Abreu's salary, and the Yankees were the only team that could handle that. Abreu is a little overrated, but he'll be an improvement over what they had.

One thing that's weird about this deal is Brian Cashman's quote. "I had to get Lidle or the deal didn't get done. Philadelphia got some players in this deal. I'm tired of giving players. I want to get players." He makes it sound like the Yankees are the team trading away top talent every year at the trading deadline. What a joke.

I'm really surprised that Philly accepted so little in return from this trade. 4 prospects for an All-Star and a decent starting pitcher? And only one of those prospects is considered to be top-notch. What were the Phillies thinking? I could give away a paper weight and some pocket lint for more than that. I understand that they wanted to clear salary, but get some pieces to help rebuild your team at the same time! The Yankees had to be laughing at the steal they came away with.

On paper its a good one. We didn't give Philly really anything for both Abreu and Lidle. I would have rather had Soriano because of his history with the Yanks. But Washington may hold onto him so no-one gets him. The thing that scares me is Abreu's numbers since the 2005 all-star game. They're not terrific. Time will tell.

1) To all those "I can't believe they got them for nothing" people: by the Yanks taking both of these players, this will free up 20 million dollars to the Phillies which will make them more active on the free agent market. Pat Gillick likes going after Japanese players (he brought Ichiro to Seattle) I think this move is partial to freeing up money to go after that Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka (the guy who throws the Gyro Ball) who will be eligible to be bought from his Japanese club( which costs 10 million dollars plus 10% of the players agreed contract) after this season.
2) As a Yankees fan to be honest I am more excited about the Lidle part of the trade. Lidle is a big improvement over Chacon and Ponson. Pitching is important, I really didnt think we were really that dry in the offensive department, but another patient hitter is welcomed. I think the Yankees should still try to make a move for a middle reliever, to help out that bullpen, then we can send Ponson packing back to Aruba.

3) From an intview with Terry Francona:
One person who was not as excited to hear of the Yankees' addition was Red Sox manager Terry Francona, who managed Abreu from 1998-2000 in Philadelphia.

"He is an impact player," Francona said. "My hope is he stinks. My concern is that he goes over there for a couple of months and he might be one of the best players in baseball, because I think he has that in him. He's a good player."

I think it's a very smart trade! We are in desperate need of a good starting pitcher, and I think Lidle should help fill that hole... Also, Bobby Abreu should be able to help us out a lot. Everyone says he's a good hitter and fielder! I wonder if we will trade Gary Sheffield next year, now that we have Abreu. I guess we'll just have to see what Abreu can do!

Yes, with Matsui and Sheffield out of the batting order, Abreu will be a huge relief. Lidle is definately needed since The Big Unit is not producing well this year and with Pavano injured for the rest. So overall Im happy the Yanks got this deal. I just hope Randy starts getting pitching better and A-Rod not making any more errors.

I'd hardly call it a trade. Yankees did pretty good. I would much rather have seen them go after another top line starter. The team already has a lot of hitters but I guess one more doesn't hurt. Yankees should blow right passed the Red Sox from here on in. Joe Torre has done it with mirrors this year. He should get manager of the year but Jim Leyland will win. Detroit has fooled everyone.

For the immediate present, it will help to have a regular presence in right field, and Lidle has got to be better than Ponson, BUT I am always disturbed when they trade away the future for more old guys. This season when they had to bring up lots of guys from Columbus, should have taught them that a good farm system can really help in the present, not just the future.

Yankees need pitching not hitting. Lidle is not the man. But since I am not a Yankees fan I say "great move".
