Unfortunately, people use it more for the frivolous spin offs rather than the real thing - Learning!

Sounds a bit like a homework question ;)
information technology by definition means the processes by using computers to help people achieve personal or corporate goals better.
A super market using barcodes, and barcode scanners is an example of this, as is a ticket machine in a parking lot being used to keep track of car numbers, and the time they spend in the parking lot to change the charge for staying there. These things would be unfeasible to be done by human recognition due to the vast amount of memory and accuracy needed.
