I've thought about this...

Its possible the chicken evolved into an egg laying animal from something else, so (just an example) perhaps chickens were first born live, then over many generations evolved through being born in a membrane, then leathery eggs like reptiles, then the hard shell we know today. Of course it didnt happen overnight.

But most obviously, an egg cant lay itself. So, as sherlock Holmes says, "When we eliminate the impossible, all that's left, no matter how improbable, must be the solution". Chicken came first.

I am assuming, the chicken because in order for the egg to be first, something had to be around to produce the egg.

The Chicken - I mean, who would have cared for the chick after it hatched????? It would have died and then we wouldn't have had chickens today.....
