I have about 30-40 Giant African Land snails that I need to get rid of....any suggestions on Humane ways of getting rid of them, or anywhere/anyone who would be willing to take them from me for free?

(I live in Essex so anyone within that area would be greatly appreciated)

These particular kinds of snails are considered pests. They eat everything, and if they are eaten, have the potential to pass along a form of meningitis. African land snails are hermaphrodites, which means they can produce eggs without each other. They are both sexes in one. These are wanted for extermination and are illegal to keep as pets in the continental US. Kill them. Sorry. Put them in a bucket with water and add dish soap, they will die.

I think you would be best trying to get them rehomed with someone that has experience.

Have you got a local zoo that you can contact? I had a nightmare getting the RSPCA to respond to a dog that had been abandoned so you probably wont have much luck there. Childrens farms are another place to try, have a look in the yellow pages. You may have to take them yourself if somewhere agrees to take them off your hands but at least you know that they have gone somewhere where they will be looked after.

Good luck!!

SNAIL SALAD

2 to 3 lbs. snails
2 lg. stalks celery, chopped
6 sm. radishes, chopped
1 lg. white onion, chopped
1 sm. wedge red cabbage, diced
1/2 c. corn oil
1/2 c. wine vinegar
1/8 tsp. cracked pepper seeds
1/8 tsp. oregano
1 sm. bottle Kraft Zesty Italian dressing
Dash each of celery salt, onion powder, sweet basil and garlic powder

Boil snail conches for 45 minutes until tender. Clean and slice snails as thin as possible. Mix the first 5 ingredients together in a bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and thoroughly mix. Refrigerate overnight. Spoon onto bed of lettuce to serve.

Contact local pet shops to see if they will take some off your hands and put ads in the free ads, post office, pet shops.

Contact the RSPCA or local animal sanctuary. I don't know a humane way of killing them but the above suggestions may help with rehoming them.

The problem is, if you've kept them all together in the same tank then they could all be carrying eggs; so when you rehome them and keep one, they'll all lay eggs and you're back to square one.
There is a humane way to euthanase them, but I don't intend to post it here or recommend you try. Take them to a vets and get them to do it, or advertise them via an advert in local papers and pet shops.
