I know no one comes close to these profound leaders, but is there anyone alive today that is a strong promoter of peace and non-violence in a big way?

Yes I thought of Mother Theresa, but unfortunately so you are correct she is no longer with us.

I miss Pope John Paul. Never know how good someone is until they are gone. They promised us a Latin American Pope and we did not get one. I do not like that the new pope has a connection with Nazi Germany. There are so many people who do not.

Nelson Mandela indeed (we call him Madiba here in SA). Anyway, after being imprisoned for many years and given the prison number 46664 (to symbolize evil) he was released in 1991 - without any bitterness or resentment. That takes a lot. Just so by the way, his Personal Assistant is a white Afrikaans lady, which just proves the point.

Here in South Africa we adore him. It will be a great loss when his life ends - the whole country will be in mourning.

Cindy Sheehan. Yeah, I know she's annoying. But think what an SOB King was with that canting speech style, or what a pain in the rear Ghandi was ... "I will starve myself to death unless you submit." Sheehan is trying to get America to wake up to the fact that Bush is an insane adventurer and a tool of the corporate monster.
Remember what Eisenhower warned us in his fairwell address: the military-industrial complex is the greatest danger to peace in the world today. The arms makers and dealers and the professional soldiers have way way too much invested in the concept of organized slaughter to even consider peace as an option.
Ike knew what he was talking about. Sheehan (bless her whining voice) is just carrying the torch.
