Anne Rice - I think I would go for The Vampire Lestat + The Queen of the Damned combo. Haven't read Simon Clark, though. Lestat and his view of the earth as a Savage Garden really relates to me :)

I Love Anne Rice. Try Blood & Gold, Pandora, The Body Thief, The Vampire Armand, The Vampire Chronicles, The Mayfair Witches, Lasher, Taltos, Memnoch the Devil, Vittorio the Vampire, Merrick, Blackwood Farm.
These are some you could try, they are all great! Enjoy...!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the series by
Fred Saberhagen. There are several of them,
including The Dracula Tapes, The Holmes-Dracula
File, Thorn, and An old friend of the family. (I'm
not certain I have that last title entirely right.) These
are about Bram Stoker's original Dracula, but
present him in an entirely different light. The Dracula Tapes gives Stoker's original story from
Dracula's viewpoint, and present the "correct"
version.
I have read Stoker's Dracula and many other
vampire stories, but find I prefer Saberhagen's
version to most of the others. I haven't done more
than glance through any of Rice's books, and was
not attracted enough to read any of them.

Anne Rice books are very good. I liked Queen of the Damned the best. Laurell K Hamilton also writes good vampire fiction with her Anita Blake series, although they're starting to get a bit smutty. Christine Feehan has a vampire series and they are all quite good. T.A. Banks also writes vampire fiction with an apocalypse twist.

There is a series about a vampire called Saint-Germain by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro with very good historical backgrounds.
I like the the new paranormal romance novels coming out like those of Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan too.

I used to be a huge Anne Rice fan. Her early books are excellent, the most recent ones shockingly bad. My favourite, the Vampire lestat and the Queen of the damned.

I've read all of Anne Rice's books. I loved Pandora and of the first three in the trilogy, I liked Queen of the Damned because of the answers and background it gives on possible origins. My least favorite is Vittorio, not exactly sure why. Uneasiness with the black sacrament, I suppose.

I liked some of Anne Rice's books, the early ones were my favorites.I like Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, she's a young author, who has some interesting books in the vampire genre. Sunshine, by Robin McKinley is another interesting one. Dhampire, by the Hendees, is kinda interesting, too.
