his son is 8
his age is 32

let x be his age, and y be his son's

equation 1: x=4y
equation 2: x+16 = 2y

substitute eq.1 to 2

4y+16=2y
y=8

from eq1
x=4*(8)
x=32

supposing that John's son is x years old then John = 4x
sixteen years later
John's son = x + 16
John = 4x + 16
but the question also says that in sixteen years he becomes he becomes twice his son's age.
since his son will be x+16 , twice the son's age would be 2( x+16)
the father will be 4x + 16
so twice son's age = father's age
replacing the statement with values,
2( x+16) = 4x + 16
2x + 32 = 4x + 16
4x - 2x = 32 - 16
2x = 16
x = 6
so the son is 8 years old and the father is 32 years old.

checking it
in 16 years time son will be 8 plus 16 =24 years
father will be 32 plus 16 = 48 years which is double the son's age.
so the answer is right.

Son Age = X
John = 4 X

16 years later:
4X + 16 = 2 (X + 16)
2X + 8 = X + 16
X = 8

Son = 8 years
John = 32 years

the equation is the following:
4 x= y
4 x+16 = 2 y ; x= father's age ; y= son's age
y=8
the result is the father is 32 and his son is 8. then
16 years later the father is 48 and his son is 24.

John is now 32 and his son is 8. So John is four times older than his son.

Sixteen years later, John will be 48 and his son will be 24. So that's only twice his son's age.
