I am looking to move to London and would like a wood-burning or gas remote-controlled fireplace. Are either permitted in London? If not, are they permitted in the suburbs?

Under the Clean Air Act local authorities may declare the whole or part of the district of the authority to be a smoke control area. It is an offence to emit smoke from a chimney of a building, from a furnace or from any fixed boiler if located in a designated smoke control area. It is also an offence to acquire an “unauthorised fuel” for use within a smoke control area unless it is used in an “exempt” appliance (“exempted” from the controls which generally apply in the smoke control area). The current maximum level of fine is £1,000 for each offence.

Fireplaces In London

There's no restriction on fireplaces, although new ones have to comply with safety regulations. (Basically so they don't burn the house down). There is a restriction on smoke both in London and well out into the suburbs.

A gas fire needs sufficient ventilation in the room. You may need to get an extra ventilator fitted.

With a wood burning fire, there should be no problems provided the chimney can provide enough draught.

If you want to burn coal, you need a special type of fire that recycles the smoke so only CO2 and water vapour go up the chimney.

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/9GP17
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.

You must use smokeless fuel. I don't know if wood is classified as smokeless.
