In 1975 the MITS Altair (8800) became the first pre-assembled desktop computer available on the market.

Jonathan Titus and Ed Roberts did the most work on it.

Usually considered to be the Altair, created in 1975 and named for a planet in a Star Trek eposide he was watching at the time. It had no mouse, keyboard, or monitor. You input information one letter at a time using eight switches and morse code like code for each letter. Blinked out results on eight little red lights. Came as a kit and you assembled it yourself.

First practical desktop computer was the Apple. Steve Jobs created and sold out of his garage.

First PC (running DOS etc) was the IBM PC in 1983. But IBM got out of the PC business early. They didn't think they would ever be more than a fad. IBM saved money when it created the PC by using off the shelve parts for everything. So it was easy for anyone - or any company - to clone the PC. That gave it an advantage over Apple. They could be made fast and cheap. No licensing, etc.
