On 27th August Mars is going to be visible to the naked eye as big as the Moon. What time should we look out into the sky if you are based in India?

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

This will cultimate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of Earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:02 am in India.

It will look like The Earth has 2 Moons. Don't Miss it..... The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

NOTE: Share this with ur friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.

Mars will not appear as big as the Moon this August, or at any other time either. That bogus E-mail has been circulating ever since the historic close approach of Mars on August 27, 2003. But even then, Mars just looked like a bright star and not like the Moon. Mars never gets close enough to the Earth to look as big as the Moon.

When it was originally posted CORRECTLY it was accurate, but what you said is wrong on at least two counts:

It was posted in 2003, and it was only true for August 27 of that year, Mars will not be that close again in any of our lifetimes.

It said that Mars would appear as large as the moon does to the naked eye WHEN SEEN THROUGH A TELESCOPE AT 75X. They always seem to leave that last part out!

Since then, the story circulates every couple of years, with that last part about "through a telescope" left out, and of course is bogus.

Here is the original story, as posted correctly:

[Collected via e-mail, July 2003]

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share this with your children and grandchildren. i have to congrates u, you must be having an eagles eye, you know only eagle can if it can i.e read the newspapers headline from a kilometer, if we humans have the eyes of an eagle, we would be able to read newspapers headline from a kilometer, . so do you really think u will see mars as big as moon. no way, never. a journey to moon will take u 3 days, but for mars u have to travell for 6 months at the fastest spped, moreover mars is approx. 3.5 times of moon, so this will remain a dream for u,

well in fact mars is bigger than our moon but is so far away from us that it will not appear in the night sky as big as the moon. you can already see mars with the naked eye if you know where to look.

This is just a joke I'm afraid.

Mars is a long long way off and even when at it's very closest possible to the Earth it only looks like a very bright star.

The only way you'll ever see it as big as the Moon is to actually travel there!

Well I am quite not sure about this but what I am sure is that Mars got closer to earth ever in history on AUGUST 27,2003 AT 5:51 EDT which is equivalent to approximately 3:50 pm in New Delhi,India.See this article:

We anxiously await the next question that you will ask in a month from now: "How could I have been so gullible?"

Do some research. Or better yet, actually go out and observe the night sky.

It's a hoax, a rerun of inormation from a couple of years ago.
It's not going to happen again....not in our lifetimes...
