Something a bit more modern and funky is to name a star after him. Ties in nicely with the naming theme of the day too! I did it for my daughter's naming day in June. Google name a star and you will find hundreds but some are way more expensive than others but then you sometimes get more with it like frames for the certificate and books on astronomy.
Anyone who does this make sure you do it with someone who only uses stars seen with the naked eye and who includes a star chart and co-ordinates of your star so when he's older you can take him outside and show him which is his star! Also make sure its visible in the right hemisphere (and maybe at a certain time of year like his birthday or something?)
Remember it is only a gesture and there's no1 who can name a star for you that scientists will use. It will only go in their directory and scientists will use the same code for the star as they always did. That said, I suggest you don't buy 1 of the £70 packs I've seen but 1 of the £20 packs I found on e-Bay coz the only difference really is the fancy packaging!!!

A bible, because that signifies the commitment you've made, and I agree with the comments made previously about savings accounts / Premium Bonds, which are an excellent idea.
The best gift you can give him though is to make sure you take your duties responsibly and are always there for him. There'll be times when he's much older when you could be the trusted advisor and friend if he's got problems that he can't or won't discuss with his family.

That depends...are you going to be buying gifts often or do you want to make a one time gift for now. As a parent I find that anytime someone gives my kids clothes or even diapers it is a great help. However if it is a one time gift for now consider opening him a bank account in which you will make small deposits every once in a while.

I don't think as a Godparent you need to buy anything out of the ordinary. Ive got two children and they have four Godparents each. They where given money, clothes, toys, silver things ( photo frames, money boxes, egg cups and spoons) You could open a post office account or a building society account.Congratulations on being asked to be Godparent.

Here the typical present that a godfather does to the child is shoes, like sayin :"to stand up your feet". Don't know if it makes sense to u but Here in Greece that's what all godfathers do!

My godparents gave me a silver cup and spoon with engravings of my name at the time and the christening date (or whatever is applicable).
Also good is a savings account with good interest, $20 here and there adds up over 18 years!
Hope that helps.
Funnily enough I recently found the pictures of my christening for the first time (they were stowed away in a box in the depths of my garage).

The first person beat me with my response. Savings bonds or a bank account is a great idea. Contribute to it yearly on the boy's birthday or for holidays. It's not a thrilling gift for the child, but when he gets older, it can help him with his education.
Congratulations!

Premium Bonds or savings bonds. Far more useful than a christening cup.

a gift card to babies r us is always great--newborns need so many basic "unfun" essentials....everyone buys lil clothes and toys which are great but mom and baby could really use diapers and the like. congrats dear!
