What is Full Metal Alchemist about?

I had never seen it before and i caught just a few minutes of it the other day and it looked really interesting. Can anyone tell me what it's about? Characters were named after 7 deadly sins: are they regular characters or were they just in that one episode?

Full Metal Alchemist is about 2 young boys Edward and Al whose mother died. They use alchemy (scientific magic) to bring her back. Instead they bring back an abomination to God. The monster rears its ugly head momentarily through a vortex diminsion which in turn somehow causes Al to lose his entire body. Ed saves his brother by fusing his soul to a suit of armor. But Ed was not completely untouched himself. He lost an arm and a leg. Although both young, their alchemy skills are to be reckoned with. Edward's are so well that he is named state alchemist or 'Full Metal Alchemist.' His mission in life is to find a Philospher's Stone. With this stone he can undo the damage alchemy has done to his brother and himself, giving the bodies they have lost back.

FMA is about two brothers who stepped into the world of practicing alchemy which is supposedly forbidden or so, well their method were. They tried ressurecting their mother who had recently passed away, but in exchange, they had to give up something precious to them. Kind of hard to tell with such limited space. You can find a lot of the details at most anime websites.

It's about a boy and his brother who learnt alchemy and once tried to bring their dead mother alive. But there was some problem and his something happened to his brother and the boy lost his right hand and his left leg. He replaced it with a metal hand and leg. And is trying to bring their hand, leg and his brother's body back.

Anime about some guys at I think an academy. They are alchemists and they do battle. That is all I can remember from some girl's oral presentation about it.
