NOPE! Everyone have to agree that Italy and France in the final are UNEXPECTED. They've both played poorly during the qualifying rounds... esp. Italy ( I mean, hello, us dumb Americans even get even with Italy... and Italy won the final... how's that even possible, oh yeah, that's right.. PKs... f- that). I personally think that Italy was unworthy of the winning, the cup should'd gone to France if Italian players did not PURPOSELY injuried essential French players: Viervia, Henry, and Ribery... and esp. kicking Zidane out of the game. Italy really cheated their winning title. French really took over the game with second half and the rest of extended time, and their defense was great, i mean, Italy just slack-off and trying to get the game into PK so they could win.

Well, they made it as far as the final with skill and maybe a little bit of luck (but every team had luck, whether good or bad), and their amazing defense held out untill the end, drawing it into penalty kicks, so yes, I do think that they deserved to win.

LOL you ignorant anti-Italians are looking like fools and acting like a cry baby. Italy won. They allow only two goals. One an own goal and one an unjust penalty kick. Did they get lucky that NO TEAM was able to score a TRUE goal on Italy? Get over it already.

absolutely NOT! im not a france fan to say this, i like the English team. italy did not deserve to be world champions this year, cos they played shitty all matches. if there was to judge the world champion winners by they gameplay in the france - italy filal, france would have won with 5 to 0...
anyone who says they played good (jilie_li for example) probably didnt even watch the matches.

I wanted Germany to win it, but Italy deserves the World Cup because they have great players like Buffon, Pirlo, Cannavaro, Totti, and Grosso on their team. And tony c, quit calling people who don't agree with you anti-Italian. We are not ignorant, racist "anti-Italians" as you like to call us, just because we were cheering for another team!

that question again...
YES they do deserve to win !
now and for the first time in ages that italians are lucky in penalty shoots, no one likes it...
and don't bring Zidane again, because all what he did, he did it by himself, he could have simply ignored provocative Materazzi.. besides, what if Zidane wasn't sent off?? would Trezeguet score his penalty? and what if France won 1-0 .. would it be fair to win a world cup final with a controversial penalty ??

No - their win over Australia was bogus. They employed slimy tactics throughout the tournament (like when they elbowed McBride) and ultimately won the final by insulting another human being's loved ones (not saying that Zidane was right - but his ejection was a big reason they won). How about their skill at faking being hurt (like toddlers) Not to mention their domestic scandal. too bad for the sport.

YES! They had:
i) great goalkeeper and defenders. The team fails the match against USA and Australia, but goalie and defenders always were at their top performance.
ii) great coach. A Federal (National) team can't have the same efficiency of a club team. Club players stays together 250 days out a year, playing, training, living in the same city, sharing hobbies as disco or golf, having holidays... In a fed team the days could be 30-40 or 70-90 if a great tournament as a WC happens. In a fed team a coach hasn't enough time to try tactics, movement, schemes. Having a key role player injured is a trouble in a club, a catastrophe in a fed team.
Coach Lippi played preliminaries with his favorite 4-3-1-2. When Totti was injured by a broken leg on February, he was replaced by Del Piero. Italy won great friendly match (3-1 Holland, 4-1 Germany) showing an unusual attacking attitude according to Lippi's game behavior. In WC, Totti wasn't fully recovered and Del Piero was in lack of fitness. Zambrotta, Gattuso, Camoranesi had lesser injuries. De Rossi was banned for 4 match. Nesta, rated as one of the best world defender, was injured since AUS match. After Ghana and USA match, Lippi had to switch to a more defensive 4-4-1-1, better covering Totti slow movements. As result, Italy had 21 players out of 23 sent in the field, 10 players who scored a goal, 5 of them after replacements, the better defense, and won the cup. Without playing their usual tactic....
iii) great team spirit and willingness. With the football scandal going on, Beckenbauer said "Italy will fully pay its scandal at WC". Crowd and press had great pressure. Needs to say High Sport Court judgement isn't a joke: disallowing of the last 2 championship vitories and relegation in 'serie B' to Juventus (will start at -30 points), Fiorentina (-7), Lazio (-12); Milan in 'serie A' but starting at -15 and unable to join next Champions League. Players reacted focusing on their training session and Lippi's teachings. In the field, team spirit and willingness help them to reach their goal. The team can control AUS match after Materazzi was send off by a wrong red card. An unknow (and disliked by some columnist) defender as Grosso had a great goal in extra-time against Germany (this is the Italian WC 2006 photo I more like). In the final, France was winning by penalty at early 7' and no one lose his head.
Of course, a WC winner ALWAYS needs luck and circumstances. Italy had an unfair penalty against AUS, a lesser competitive quarter-final, and won in the final on penalties. But this always happens!!! France won Italy on penalties in '98. Brazil won '94 final at penalties too... Luck and circumstances aren't so hot to diminish how worthy Italians were.
