How do you opt out from being on the electoral roll so that you can keep your address private and not open to the public. For example, if you wanted to keep your address private because you were fleeing from domestic abuse and the violent partner was looking to find you?

twokay75 has got it right - unlike the others here. There is what's called a marked and an unmarked electoral register - one that is available for public perusal and which is what is bought my all these direct mail marketing companies (who usually pick up old copies which is why you probably still get junk mail for the guy who lived there ten years ago) and the electoral register that also contains details of all of us who opted out of the public register. If you are on the current electoral register I doubt the electoral officer can do much as you will be on an already published version but get on to the office for advice. Your council will be coming round in a month or two for the next register so make sure that when they do that you look out for that box to tick. Don't take yourself off the register completely - not only can it affect your credit rating but it means you don't have a vote, and if you don't have a vote you don't have a voice.

Contact the electoral roll at the valuation board and ask to not be listed in the public register. This still means that you are registered, but your information is not open to any Tom, Dick & Harry to see.

Not registering on the electoral roll is not a good idea though. Banks and other financial institutions check the electoral rolls as part of their credit check policy. If you're not on it, then you may end up with a lower credit rating than you would otherwise.

When the Council sends you the form to fill in, like they do every year, to say who is living at the address, there is a box you can tick to say you dont want to be on the electoral roll
