during winter, it's cold, out there...

and when it's cold, water expands, and metal shrinks... this creates a huge amount of stress on the metal pipes, even breaks them sometimes.

During Winter, water freezes to form ice. Water expands on cooling. Ice has more volume than water, hence the pipe breaks.
