Crime.. no...estimated 50 murders a day at present and just this week a group of English students and a group of American singers touring the country were mugged assaulted and robbed in two seperate incidents.
Transport..no.. for foreigners there is no public transport safe enough or reliable enough to travel and driving a nightmare with overcrowding and traffic jams everywhere. There multi-million dollar new super train is no where at the moment with political infighting for a share of the financial cake.
Corruption..no..even the Deputy President,
(and also the minister for moral regeneration !) was fired for being implicated with a convicted fraudster and is facing criminal charges himself now...stills sings a song (at public rallies where he tries to raise cash to pay his lawyers) about someone bringing him a machine gun..!
Aids is rampant and the minister for health advocates eating more fruit and vegatables for this!
The minister for Security tells the public if they do not like the level of crime they can leave the country and prisoners manage to bribe themselves into walking out of jail!!
the Leader and his party would rather look after other countries welfare eg Burundi, and DRC and have ministers fly friends and family at taxpayers expense around the continent than keep there eyes on the problems at home and on their doorstep!
It could be the first country to lose a World Cup or be the biggest political cover-up since JFK!
By the way that will be winter-time in South Africa with temperatures still reaching the mid 20's in the afternoon but close to freezing when the sun goes down.
I love the "Beautiful Game" as do millions in South Africa but foreigners had better do their homework and be extremely careful, if they intend going in 2010 to the country.

Transport might well be attainable in the time span.

Crime is almost certainly not. The numbers dependent on crime to earn a crust can only grow as Zimbabwe continues to crumble and people flee into South Africa. Migrants from other countries in the region continue to enter thinking there is gold at the end of the rainbow and then find there isn't even bread! The cup will act like a magnet to the criminals.

Corruption will take decades to root out. It is deeply embedded.

they better do...
otherwise, they will just show the world how blind FIFA was to give them the right to host the WC.
the highest crime rates are in south africa, you can get killed in the middle of the day.. and that can't be solved in such a short period, just like corruption..
the transport is still a big problem.. but that still can be ameliored..
the biggest problem is AIDS, something like 20 million people there got it, that is a very sad fact, what is more sad is that Blatter and his men ignored it !
there is also the weather problem.. did you know that the period of June-July in south africa is the coldest of the year?? imagine the world cup final postponed because of a storm? ehhh...
these facts just show how wrong fifa were when prefering South Africa to Morocco... Happy Worst WC !!

I think u guys are bit unfair. Sure, SA has its prob but so does many other countries. It still is a country trying to recover from its dark past, so much anger is still in the hearts of many of its citizens.. instead of standing on the side-lines and watching how SA 'could' be unable to host the world cup we should instead support and remain optimistic. I admire FIFA for putting enough faith in SA to hold the world cup.. maybe from this decision SA as a country can rise and become a united and proud nation.. if u want proof look at what happened to Germany!!

for south African to overcome to achieve all this basic needs of any modern society i think very first south Africans have to transformed themselves at an astronomical pace witch simple haven't happened anywhere in history for any country . where nelson Mandela who did not do any effort than sitting in jail for 27 years and the wife of him witch almost taking all the risk of life everyday made him what he is A GOD( who have done nothing before and after for his country rather than being celebrate) she was divorced for a dought or even sin she might have commited during his absence. Also the country who has Zululand a land so primitive they still behave like animals and Soweto town ship still much the same just few new roads. I ask south Africans what miracle they have perform after 13 years or more ending the apartheid this could have been achieved much before if black have kept quite and supported the economy rather making an issue

Couple issues 1st. Mexico is extra corrupt exceedingly whilst their very own president offered the votes to win the election 2d. Why mexico? i think of it could be extra clever in any us of a that hasnt hosted it two times alredy third. Brazil undesirable? I dont think of so in any different case they wouldnt have gained the bid for 2014 4th. What makes you think of mexico will win wc at homestead in the event that they cant even beat jamaica at homestead in the time of a qualifier? And final. whilst did mexico win of a rest room (aside from adolescents communities) im rather optimistic that should be never. No offense in basic terms cuz you thumb me down doesnt propose im incorrect its all authentic
