yup, computer aided design is right, but you can pick up the basics in a week and it takes years to become an expert.

i've now been up for 50 hours designing a school using AutoCAD.
Alternatives are ArchiCAD, Revit and a similar type of program 3DStudioMax. Rhino is available for really complex structures.
It's an amazing program and beats sitting at a drawing board anyday but i want to throw my computer out of the window!

CAD stands for Computer Aided Design. These packages are generally used to create models and drawings of components which can then be fitted into a General Assembly.

CAD is a computer aided design system, used for engineering drawings or architecture. You would tend to have a specific reason for using it, and it isnt just a play around with type system.

CAE is the next step, which is computer aided engineering, actually connecting computers to the machinery of engineering to directly produce items from electronic designs.
