When I log on to my yahoo inbox, and some other sites, I get the pop up message "your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page. As a result the page may not display correctly", I went to internet options> security the default level is medium, then when I went to custom level, all the options look terrifyingly complicated. any ideas? also what is this 'active X' controls and what do I need it for?

Go to Internet Options, Security tab, Internet, Custom level.
You will find Active X controls and plug-ins.
There are there many options. If some are "disabled", they will not load when you access a page on the net. If ou are not sure what to do, set the first one "Automatic prompting for active x controls to "enable", the others to "Ask (prompt)".
When an Active X control comes in, you will be asked if you want to use it. If your trust the site, say yes!
What is Active X ? Just a small program that does "something", like installing a new button, or, for example if you have a small video, by clicking on the picture, it calls a video player.
Most of them are decent and honnest, but there are some malicious programmers! Beware of chat rooms, MSNs, Video and music sites, games and, of course "Sex sites"...
If you refuse the Active X control, then the page willdisplay, but the "acion" will be missing...
Best regards,
JR
