Or will this dvd-writer have compatability issues because of the computer being a Dell? If it will have issues, please explain what kind of technical issues I would run into.

My computer is a Dell, running on Win XP: Professional. If there is anything else you need to know about the specs of my computer, please ask.

I blindly bought a Dell pc about 3 years ago as I didn't know anything about putting a computer together at the time. Now I know a little more putting pc's together, but not enough to answer this question myself. My tech friends have not worked with Dell computers before and so we don't know if my Dell pc will have a fit if I try to add something that isn't from Dell.

True, it really is the software that decides what is or isn't compatable. I was wondering more so if Dell has been known to make their pc's difficult to upgrade with non-Dell parts.

Does Dell implement any programs or certain hardware differences that would make it difficult to upgrade the average Dell pc without Dell parts?

I support thousands of Dell PCs for my company and am constantly order upgrade and replacement parts. In general, Dell systems will work with most internal, standard, computer parts. In this case, as long as you have the necessary hardware specs to run the burner (CPU Speed, RAM, HDD space, etc) it should work just fine. As it is an older Dell it should be an IDE based system and work just fine.

I have installed a number of different brands of drives in Dell systems. In fact, Dell themselves use various brands of drives that can all be ordered through them, so there is no one brand that will work best, or that won't work at all.

actually, it all depends on the configration u hav taken. and not the "Dell computers". I dont think u must be facing probs concerned with drivers as u r using WinXp.

I dont think there are such "Compatibility probs" as u r just installin a
device and not a software!
