Hi Joeline

Your question is a very open. Is South Africa that bad? Compared to what?

Let's consider crime first:
This site is a site dedicated to giving victims of crime a voice, as not much action is taken by the government and the police officers hands are often tied.
http://www.crimexposouthafrica.org/
If you read through that site, then the answer to the crime situation being bad is yes.
Let's get a little more specific here, since crime could be anything.
According to http://www.nationmaster.com/country/sf-south-africa here are some quick stats:
South Africa number 2 in the world for Assault.
Number 10 in the world for car theft
Number 4 in the world for murder
Number 2 in the world for murder per capita (Columbia wins)
Number 1 in the world for murders by firearms.
Number 2 in the world for rape
Number 1 in the world for rape per capita

Ok, so all bad news. South Africa is therefore very bad in the crime area.

Next is South Africa bad with regards to unemployment?
http://www.busrep.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=562&fArticleId=3273352
In this research, South Africa's unemployment rate has gone up 153%, which is never good.
Unemployment rate currently stands between 26% and 41% : http://www.csae.ox.ac.uk/resprogs/usam/default.html
Not so bad, until you compare it with other countries. UK currently at 4%, Egypt at 10%.

So, South Africa is bad for employment.

Next is to consider health maybe?
Currenlty South Africa has an AIDS population of 21.5%. If you're a male, you are expected to live to the ripe old age of 46.54 years, if female, you'll last an extra 3 days.

So health isn't that great either.

If you consider these facts then the answer to your question is yes, South Africa is really bad.

I'm a South African, now living in the UK, and the great things about South Africa I'd like to list are:
1. The friends
2. The countryside is awesome, The Drakensburg, Cape Town

The problem comes in that most of my friends moved away from South Africa to the UK and OZ, and there are many places to see in the world, of equal or even greater beauty.

Hope that helps you with your question.

Cheers

AJ

Brilliant answer from AJ which sums it up very nicely. South Africa is a beautiful country completely spoiled by crime and a Government still living in the Dark Ages. The President and Health Minister still have to believe the connection between sexual promiscuity and HIV/AIDS. As for wild animals in the street well the answer is Yes but of the 2 legged nature and normally referred to as criminals. Some of the worst spoken and most fractured English can be heard in South Africa so your claims are a sweeping generalisation devoid of fact. However, the greatest tragedy of South Africa is that many, many citizens have had to leave and seek their fortune elsewhere for a myriad of reasons and are unlikely to return until it is stabilised and resumes normality.

HUH!?!?! who ever told you that animals roam freely on our streets? Some people just say that to show that South Africa hasn't progressed!! Remember, it's part of the Commonwealth so it will be like England!

So does all the British colonized areas I am Nigerian and I speak proper English. South Africa is not bad at all. I just feel the people who imprisoned them should not call themselves African it is wrong. I know they would not try that in Nigeria.

Was it in The Secret Policeman's Ball where they sang "I've never met a nice South African"?

Ah, but times have moved on since then.
