Before I saw the Star Wars prequels, I would have gone with Star Wars all the way... but they're horrible in comparison to Lord of the Rings as films, and the prequels honestly made me dislike the original Star Wars trilogy.
So, LOTR, definitely.

Lord of the Rings came first, as a series of novels that captured a loyal audiance. Star Wars blew away people in the late 70's, capturing a loyal audiance. LOTR became a movie that did the trilogy justice and created even more loyal fans. Star Wars made three prequel movies, and "digitally enhanced" the original greatness, pissing off a LOT of Star Wars loyal fans, weakening the franchise.
For that reason, I give LOTR the edge.

Lord of the Rings is much better because its less strain on the eyes plus its more intense in terms of keeping the excitement flowing.

That's like asking me if I like Peanut Butter or Jam better...when everyone knows they go together. You gotta do both...that's all there is to it.
