I've seen them both and can honestly say that they are both very good. Scarlett was done so long after Gone with the Wind was that it's an excellent story on it's own but I have a hard time making the connection between Clark Gable and Timothy Dalton. Joanne Whalley is excellent in her role as Scarlett but there really was no replacing Vivian Leigh.
I appreciated the fact that they went into Scarlett's Irish background when they filmed Scarlett. The Fenian Brotherhood and the fight between the English landlords and the Irish tenants was just as much a part of history as the Civil War as. The sequel really exploited Scarlett's worldness and strength. Very good!
Gone with the Wind, what could you possible say about that movie that hasn't been said? The actors/actresses, the costumes, and sets. It's not hard to look for reasons that the movie is and was such a legend. I'm just glad that the whole story doesn't end with, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."

The movies where good. I've got the books too. There is a lot of things that happen that are in the book " Gone With The Wind" that is left out of the movie. You should read it. It is long but goes into more detail about Scarlet's life. She had more kids in the book.

I've seen "Gone with the Wind".
I thought it glorified the lives of the old Southern White racist slave owners. I've always wanted to read that book someone wrote called "The Wind Done Gone", which was the same story, but told from the slaves' point of view.
Unfortunately, the family of the original author sued to keep it from being published and I don't know where to get a copy.

I didn't like the 2nd one as much. I just watched the first one again recently after many years and I was surprised at the portrayal of black people, but then again the film was made about 50 years ago and is about events of 140 years ago. It really is a classic love story.
I also read both of the books--the first one countless times, the second one only a couple of times.

Yes. I like them both, also. It does take a bit to get used to the characters in the second one, but it also gives a good closure to the film, so you know what happened with everyone.
