The way I look at it, mourning is process to INTERNALIZE the unfortunate event and get a grip on how to deal with it.
if you spent efforts in thinking how it should LOOK, you are simply prolonging the process, and thats going to get you greater grief and pain.
The proper way is:
First, acknowledge to yourself that your loved is gone.
Second, take a look at the personal damage that this has caused to you.
Third, UNDERSTAND fully that when someone passes away, nothing BAD happens to that person. He is just in another dimension and probably much relieved
Fourth, Wish peace and good journey to the soul of that person.
A good mourning acts as a trigger to a healthy grieving process that follows. Acceptance is the key.

Death should not be mourned .
Try to understand what is life and death.
Every one who is born is going to die and it as simple as one changing the clothes. Soul leaves the body [ the person dies ] and then takes another body and so on and on ............ till it is time to go back to God after the Holocast / natural calamities , All sould go back to god in form of star , and then wait at the home of supreme soul before they are again born in the world according to their karma and may enjoy happiness , for this world was once the heaven as said in the Holy books ......

i don't know if there's such thing as a "proper way" of mourning. but i think that acknowledging your feelings is a healthy way of mourning. you let your sadness out, cry if you feel like crying. sometimes, people are in denial of what happened, or become angry towards the dead relative or towards him/herself. those are just normal responses to loss of a loved one. eventually, they become fully aware of the loss, which leads to total acceptance.
if however, a person's grieving becomes prolonged, or a person is in excessive denial, or is experiencing prolonged depression, i guess that's not healty anymore. medical intervention should be seeked immediately.
