She mainly wants to check her POP email account, if she has wifi and finds a compatible hotspot willl she automatically have a connection or would she have to "dial-up" or something similar?

As you can tell, we are new to this. Thanks for your help.

It depends if there are "open" wifi connections close to your place.

A wifi connection could be open (no passwd required), which could be a case when your neighbour or a close university runs his wifi router without securing his network. Then you can of course log in and do things you would do through cable.

But wifi networks are mostly set to require passwords (your neighbour gives it to you), wep-keys (something as your PIN code) or they just check the MAC address of the wifi card of your computer.

Passwords are to be agreed with your neighbour, if you can convince him to let you connect to his net. Other case is, when you log in to a wifi provider, then of course, you pay for a password per minute through your credit card. You just choose the c onnection, try open f.e. google, but a login screen appears where the provider asks you for a password or your credit card details.

The cheapest and most effective solution for checking email through wifi would be to use the Nokia 770 mini tablet, which offers 800x480 pixel-screen. This matters in case of PDA-surfing, and other companies usually do not offer such a resolution.

If the hot spot provide free wireless service, then you do not need an ISP access.

But some hot spots are fee paying type and it comes in many ways.

1) Payment thru your ISP. In this case, you do need to have a ISP account

2) Pyament via credit card. Here, you do not need ISP account

Hope it help,

WiFi is just a connectivity which allows u to connect to different computers ( just like in infra red or any other connectivity like USB,modem which lets u connect two same or different "devices" ). Thus i think u'll need some ISP stuff in between as there is no other any to connect to net.

She'll automatically have a connection, but depending on who's offering the wi-fi, it may not be free. Most businesses (restaurants, bookstores, etc.) offer it for free. Same for libraries and college campuses.
