I am 52 with a fair amount of time on my hands. I hate staying in to watch TV. I enjoy walking, ( not too far or too fast) cycling ( ditto) reading, dancing and am keen to try anything ( legal) that will bring me in touch with people of both sexes. I'm not keen on the idea of 'on line' chat rooms... I guess i'm just lonely, any ideas?

Ellie

you are just how I have been

I think the idea of sitting in a bar /pub as someone suggested is bonkers. The whole thing I wondered when I got divorced was how on earth do you meet someone again and not feel lonely. The sort of woman who sits in a pub looking for "friends" isnt the sort of woman I am after!

In the end -hesitantly - I hit the internet dating sites. If you use good ones (no Face Party will NOT be for you - trust me) it can be an interesting and fun experience.

Myspace is for under 30 predominantly. Do you see the same people where you walk or cycle? Maybe you could approach them. However be advised that some people use walking as alone time and may not be very forthcoming. Depending on what kind of dancing you like, maybe you could take a dance class. Also, im jealous that you have a fair amount of time on your hands. Volunteer work in a place of your choice could put you in touch with people and you would also benefit in other ways. I personally would like to volunteer at a childrens hospital where; believe it or not some terminally ill kids can be just as lonely as the elderly who are in the same situation. Sometimes parents just cant deal with the loss of a child and the nurses of paid staff members dont have as much time as they would like to give. Volunteering in this capacity would be very heartbreaking but also very enlightening.

A good way to meet like minde people is to participate in group activities that involve the things you like.

For example, for cycling, going a cycling club. For dancing, go to a dance studio. Try volunteering or community service.

just thought of it & laughed. that first answer had some computer ideas...have you considered your Community college. Take something that interests you or something you never thought you'd take or just go for the Fun of learning...i am sure you'll meet like-minded people there Age is relevant to the mindedness of folks anyway...is mindedness even a word?

There are many women like you but it doesn't help that you haven't put the area you are in or near.

I've just had a thought. Why not put an add in the local shop for like minded women that would like to meet for a walk, weather permitting?

Why does it have to be someone your own age? Should age matter?
Try going to your local community centre & look for some courses you can go on & groups you can join. If it's something you enjoy, you will have something in common with everyone there.

Wow, I heard once about a building that promotes social interactivity, it was called a BAR, or maybe a PUB.

What you do, is you go into one of these BARS and buy a drink of something and talk to people.

I personally think they will never catch on, but I heard someone tried it once and they said they met someone in there: maybe you should try it.
