im from the philippines. well, we have nice cozy beaches and diving sites - just about 2-3hrs from Manila is Anilao, you might want to scuba dive there, puerto galera is also not very far. here people are hospitable (watch out for crooks, though! in Manila, but in the provinces people are generally friendly and helpful).

hmm. food.yes, try balut! and isaw. and kare-kare! the food is great. there are also great malls around. try SM Megamall.

good luck to your trip! remember, it is illegal to give alms to street beggars. but when you catch a little girl selling sampaguita, buy some. :-)

PS: contrary to what clint has said, i think filipinos in general are nice to foreigners, fascinated even. perhaps he's got some nasty experiences when he was here, but i know lots of foreigners you come back every and now, some of them even planning to settle here upon retirement.

more tips: vacation is also very cheap here. $1 = around 50pesos. you can buy plenty stuff with your $100.
good luck!

Ahhh, It's dirty, dangerous and we are not liked by them too much. That was just my experience in the Navy (spent a chunk of time there).

In response to UM's answer, she is correct also. Much of my time was spent in the non-civilized parts fighting terrorists and saving the locals. No one seemed even a bit grateful.

The only thing that really took me back were all the married women making extra money as prostitutes when the American and British ships came in. Oh, and I was bitten by a viper, a big one.
