I think that is a very individual question. People who have no hope sometimes commit suicide or give up, stop taking care of things and fade away mentally and physically.
There are some people who have no hope of anything beyond what they have right this second, and they move forward anyway. That takes a strength beyond the norm, and while it would be a difficult existance, it would be possible.
I would suggest that the human soul will never allow hope to be dead. We always will be hoping for something better, if not for us, then for somebody else. Just on a normal day we hope for a smile or that the show tonight will be good, or that everything turns out ok with things going on in our lives. Even someone who is dying is hoping to get better, or hoping for peace, or hoping for an afterlife. If none of these things were true, they might be hoping for another to go on. I think that humans are always going to look for a reason to hope for something.

sure we could live without it
why couldn't we?

if we didn't have hope, the only difference would be we wouldn't have hope!

people wouldn't be as gullible, they wouldn't play the lottery or bet on horse races hoping to win a long shot!

people wouldn't waste their time hoping to get into heaven (a place that doesn't even exist, so what is the point hoping to go there instead of enjoying the short life you've got!?)

In a lot of ways hope is an affliction and it's not a necessity.

Hope, courage they are all in our head. They are just ways to keep us going. Every individual has its own way to get by and get passed dissapointments. If hope "died", then , some people would figure out some new "mental anti-psychotic" and some wouldn't . But like i said, it's all in our head.

Hope is not a living thing therefore it cannot be dead.

wether you have hope or not is in your mind set. Any one can have hope or any one can give it up.

But it is always there to be had and never dies

We will hopeless without it. Humans survive because of hope you know. Without it, i don't think that humans could gone this far, could fight other, could give his best on working, studying, loving, caring, etc. Humans can not evolved.
