You are looking for what is called an "abstract of title". This traces the ownership to a piece of property. I have bought and sold a lot of property in my life and have had several abstracts done. In a couple of cases, the abstract refered to the transfer of land from France to the United States as part of the Louisania Purchase. A title search company will perform this research for you for a fee. It involves a lot of leg work at the courthouse and other repositiries of real estate records. Any real estate company can put you in touch with someone who will do this for you.

If your house is extremely old (even by California standards), your local historical society may be able to shed some light on its' history and add some color to the legal record.

Good luck with your search for information.

Your mortgage papers should list all who owned the home. If it only states the names of the people who owned it before you, then ask the tax collector's department (in your county) who the former owners were.
